Treating Different Skin Types
There are four different skin types; super oily, combination, dry, and normal skin. I want you to know that taking care of your skin isn’t expensive or difficult, it just takes some commitment & just a little bit of your time. I’m here to tell you all the tips & tricks to treat it. I find using natural products work best.
So, lets talk skin types. You ladies and gentlemen out there with the super oily skin. This is when your sebaceous glands are producing too much of our natural oils called sebum.
Although we don’t like that our super oily skin can easily clog your pores and lead to acne break outs, let me tell you the benefits of it. Oily skin means fewer wrinkles! Your skin produces an oil that helps preserve the skin. With having over active sebaceous glands, we need to find balance in maintaining your skin’s natural moisture. Here’s some tricks:
Masking once a week will help. Masks that include charcoal, honey, shea butter, aloe, and lemon. Make sure your masking after you cleanse.
Using a serum and moisturizer after you cleanse. Using things like tea tree oil and sulfur based products will benefit getting rid of the excess oils but also keeping your skin balanced. Witch hazel alone or with rose water and coconut oil are two great serums.
ROSE WATER!! I love the stuff! I use Mario Badescu rose water misting spray. It’s priced at $7 at Sephora and $12 at Ulta. Misting your face once a day with this stuff does wonders. I keep the mini bottle in my purse and have the larger bottle at home for refills. After misting with the rose water your skin will feel refreshed and moisturized.
Cleansing your skin twice before applying your astringents and moisturizers. I find this helps me a lot. I use a very gentle, moisturizing cleanser that contains vitamin C. If your cleanser or moisturizers smell like oranges thats one tell it contains vitamin C. The first cleanse is to rid your skin of makeup, and or dirt that collects on the surface layer over a 12 hour period of time. Followed with a second thorough cleanse with a different cleanser, one that has more acids in it like salicylic or glycolic. This second cleanse gets rid of the excess oils.
Sticking with a regularly used skincare regimen is important. Your night regimen should consist of two cleanses, serum, thick moisturizer, eye cream and lip balm. Your morning regimen is quite similar. One cleanse, serum, light moisturizer, eye cream, and lip balm.
Some readers are probably wondering what I meant by “thick moisturizer” versus “light moisturizer”. If you see ‘Hyaluronic acid’ in the ingredients, that’s a good thing. Normally this ingredient is used in heavier moisturizers. Hyaluronic acid is actually produced naturally in our skin. It’s a substance that keeps our skin young, soft, and supple. Using this ingredient helps you train your oily skin to find it balance and only produce necessary, natural oils. A light natural moisturizer for day would be something aloe based. Gel like moisturizers are normally lighter on the skin as well. I like PUR 4-in-1 cloud cream, its extremely light and doesn’t feel heavy on your skin at all. It’s priced at $38. It is cruelty free and it lasts forever. When using moisturizer, for oily skin, you only need a dime size amount to cover your entire face.
Now, let’s talk about our combination type skin. I feel this one is a little trickier to handle. Combination type skin is when your T-zone is oily but your cheeks and the sides of your face are more dry. When I had lived in Pennsylvania, my skin was extra oily all over. Now, living in Colorado, it drys out my skin. I still have oily skin but it produces way less, so now I have combination skin. The only places I normally get zits are in my T-zone area. Have you ever heard of Peter Thomas Roth? He has an amazing acne treatment line. I use his the ‘spot treatment’, It’s magical. Anyways, when trying to balance your skin it’s essential to stay on your skin regimen, but having a balanced regimen. One that gives you moisture but also consists of light exfoliants. You don’t want to over exfoliate, though, more than twice a week. Masking once a week is great for combination skin types. Using a few different ones are important, making sure we’re switching it up. When your skin is feeling more dry - use more products with heavier moisture. When your skin is feeling a bit more oily than normal cut back on the heavier moisture and use more water based products, gentle exfoliation, and make sure you are doing your regimen consistently. Missing a day could cause break outs or more oil! Don't forget about your eyes, making sure you moisturize them everyday at the end of your skin regimen.
Now for my dry skin types… using a line that incorporates moisture in each step is essential. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, primrose oil, coconut oil, cucumber extract, and avocado oil all help with dry skin tones. If you see any of these ingredients, this is right up your alley. Each step should consist of at least one of these ingredients. Staying consistent with your regimen is important. I think I have said this in every paragraph!! Even using a humidifier at home helps. Choosing the right fabrics that are kind to your skin are important too. Making sure you are using allergen-free moisturizing soaps is important too. BUT one of the BEST things to do to help dry skin, is moisturizing frequently!
